Betting guides for the tax, the law and the codes on a Kenyan betslip

Betting guides for Kenyan punters start with the rules that hit your M-Pesa balance. That means the GRA licence behind your bookmaker, the 5% excise on deposits and the 20% taken from winnings. The market guides then decode the codes on a betslip, with SportPesa's own labels and payouts in KSh.

Betting law and tax in Kenya

Kenya rewrote its betting rules in 2025. The Gambling Control Act came into force on 26 August 2025. It moved licensing from the BCLB to the Gambling Regulatory Authority. On 1 July 2026 the Finance Act 2026 added a 5% excise on every betting deposit. Winnings still lose 20% to withholding.

The law guide matches a bookmaker to its BK number on the GRA list. The tax guide works out what a KSh 10,000,000 jackpot keeps.

Work out a multibet before you stake it

Enter your stake in KSh and the odds of each pick. The calculator multiplies them into total odds and a return before tax. A three-pick multibet at 1.40, 1.55 and 1.90 comes to 4.123, so KSh 250 returns KSh 1,030.75 if all three win.

The 20% withholding then comes off the KSh 780.75 profit, leaving a payout of KSh 874.60. One losing pick sinks the whole slip, however short its odds. Add a fourth pick at 1.30 and the same KSh 250 returns KSh 1,339.98 before tax.

Compare bookmakers by what you need

Next to the betting guides sit the comparison pages, and each one ranks Kenyan bookmakers for a single need. They cover welcome bonuses, betting apps, Aviator, online casino games and crypto betting. The order differs from page to page, because a site that leads on Aviator can trail on apps.

The tax rules apply on every one of them. A deposit carries the 5% excise whichever bookmaker receives it. A winning bet loses 20% of its profit to withholding before the payout reaches M-Pesa. Comparing payouts after both deductions shows what each bookmaker really pays on the same stake.
