Standings
La Liga standings and the head-to-head rule
La Liga settles a tie on points its own way. When clubs finish level on points, La Liga looks first at the games they played against each other, and only then at overall goal difference.
A side that won both meetings with a rival stays above it even with a worse GD column. In a three-way tie the mini-table of those clubs’ games decides, which is why the head-to-head results matter so much in May.
Through the season the order on the La Liga table follows points and GD, and the head-to-head rule only bites when the campaign ends level after 38 rounds.
Zones
Champions League spots in Spain this season
The coloured rows mark five Champions League places this season, then Europa League and Conference League spots, and the relegation colour on 18th, 19th and 20th.
The fifth place comes from UEFA’s extra European spot, awarded to the leagues whose clubs did best in Europe. A Spanish side sitting fifth in spring is therefore playing for the Champions League, which raises the stakes of its late games against clubs with nothing left to play for.
For the coming round, the La Liga fixtures list has every Spanish kick-off in Kenyan time, and the La Liga predictions carry a pick for each game.
Tie-break questions
How are ties broken in the La Liga table?
Spain looks at the head-to-head record first. When two clubs finish level on points, the games between them decide the order before overall goal difference is used.
How many La Liga clubs are relegated?
Three. The last three after 38 rounds go down to the Segunda Division and are replaced by three promoted sides.
Why does Spain have five Champions League places?
UEFA hands an extra place to the two leagues whose clubs did best in Europe the season before, and the zone colours on the table follow that award.
What do the coloured chips mean?
W, D and L are the last five league results of the club, newest on the right, so a run of green W chips shows a side in form.
